In the year we celebrated 30 years building and funding clean energy projects, it was special to acquire the rights to our biggest project yet. Construction has started on a 57MW wind farm in the Scottish Borders, which will generate enough power to meet the needs of over 45,000 average UK homes a year once operational.
The project was acquired with the support of our new match funding partner, TopCashback Sustainability Ltd. Fair Play Clean Energy, Thrive’s joint venture with TopCashback Sustainability brings together a combined £80 million in capital to fund new clean energy projects in the UK. An additional £20 million in match funding has also been secured to fund community owned wind and solar via our partnership with social impact investor, Better Society Capital, ensuring ordinary people can own and benefit from their local projects.  The two funding relationships allow Thrive to accelerate the scale of impact deliverable.
Last year we also acquired the rights to the 12.6MW Abergorki wind farm in South Wales which is due to start construction this summer.
With 40MW of new capacity added to our development pipeline in 2024, plus a further 35MW of match funded development capacity, we are well on track to achieve our goal to double generation capacity by 2028.

Supporting communities near our sites remains a crucial part of our social impact work. Through our annual Community Benefit Programme, last year we awarded £33,000 in energy efficiency grants to community centres close to our clean energy projects. The grants have enabled important community hubs to make energy efficiency improvements, such as insulation and draught proofing that help cut carbon and costs.
We were also pleased to celebrate our 30th birthday with many of you at our open day at Caton Moor wind farm in September.

Thrive announces £11.3 million operating profit for 2024 – with £20.6 million cash allocated to build new clean energy projects

Triodos Renewables picked up the project in April 2014 via a long term relationship with an experienced developer. Alongside Dunfermline and Eye, it is our third merchant project – where power is provided directly to an industrial business.
The Acciona AW77-1500 turbine began generating at the very end of November 2014, with its first full month being December 2014. With a site capacity of 1.5MW and good forecast average wind speed, the annual forecast output was 4.5GWh when the turbine was erected, which is enough to power 1,093 UK homes.
A year on, the annual generation was even better than forecast at 4.75GWh, which is enough to power 1,150 UK homes. In fact, power from the turbine has been used to power the Greenvale site itself, so more of the potatoes that end up on supermarket shelves have been processed and packed using renewable energy.
This approach allows a merchant site to manage their energy costs, as well as demonstrate their sustainability credentials against increasingly strict and competitive supply chain criteria, maintaining job security for local people.

<h3>What&#8217;s your role at Triodos Renewables?</h3>
I’ve worked at Triodos Renewables since 2012 as Operations Manager. My core role is to make sure our projects are running safely and profitably by generating as much renewable electricity as possible, to hopefully pay dividends for our shareholders (of which I’m one).
I’m based in Bristol but relish site trips to the far reaches of the country, catching up with local representatives and seeing our work in action. It’s important for me to understand the local lie of the land (proverbial and physical) and our sites are in pretty amazing places to visit. I’m never envious of friends making work trips to familiar-looking meeting rooms in busy city centres! Plus, it’s always fun finding small, independent hotels or B&amp;Bs near our sites who benefit from overnight trips of wind farm technicians and visitors.
<h3>What&#8217;s a day in the life of a Operations Manager like?</h3>
The day-to-day elements of my role are making sure the electrical / mechanical servicing and safety inspections are all up to date and responding quickly to any unexpected situations which come up.  If it’s too windy then some of our planned work may need to be rescheduled so I look at weather forecasts from two angles now – if it’s warm and sunny then my cycle into the office will be more satisfying; but if it’s wet and windy then I’m glad to know our turbines will all be pumping out the power.
There’s a lot of variety in my role – which is important to me. I’ve had a real thrill from organising open days and greeting a really diverse range of visitors – school groups, families and neighbours; planning officials and engineers; shareholders, renewable energy-sceptics and even protestors (though they weren’t protesting about our wind farm!) People will step out of their car having driven from home and have to steady themselves or catch their breath in a huge gust of wind. It makes them realise the power there, waiting to be harnessed in the exposed, bracing sites we’ve chosen.
<h3>What do you love about Triodos Renewables?</h3>
I love the fact that we’re a small and dynamic team, with high aspirations but already delivering significant impact. The fact that sustainability underpins everything we do and that our values genuinely guide business decisions make Triodos Renewables, for me, an honestly great place to work.
<h3>What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?</h3>
One of my proudest moments was filming a ‘virtual wind farm field trip’ with a class of buzzing local school children during Bristol’s year as European Green Capital in 2015.  As a school governor myself, I know it’s incredibly powerful to support classroom learning with experiences away from the school environment. I’m thrilled with the film we made, which is now available to schools as a <a href="https://www.sustainablelearning.com/resource/best-bristol-virtual-fieldtrip-wind-energy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">teaching resource nationwide</a>.
With two children myself, who will inherit the legacy of the energy mix we develop today, I embrace the concept of renewable energy. The government drastically changed its support for certain renewable technologies during 2015 – and did so abruptly, to the detriment of many people and businesses I know.  I’m obviously glad that my job has not been affected and that Triodos Renewables has shown itself, in my mind, to be resilient and agile enough to respond quickly to unexpected political and commercial changes.
<h3>What&#8217;s your professional background?</h3>
Before Triodos Renewables I worked for seven years at a leading UK carbon reduction company, supporting delivery of advice and carbon reduction measures into sectors such as social housing, education and supply chain. I even project managed a team of volunteers to build a straw bale classroom! I’ve enjoyed applying (and developing) aptitudes in areas as diverse as health and safety, IT, project management, logistics and marketing. My friends – in work and out – would hopefully describe me as loyal, diligent and capable.
<h3>What do you do when you&#8217;re not at Triodos Renewables?</h3>
I love music, good food and the outdoors and sharing all of those with my family. My children look out for “Daddy’s windmills” on journeys and we even planned holidays in the last two years around my work trips to pretty nice locations. Wind turbines do alter the British scenery. But so much of our landscape is the result of farming, industry and planning heritage that I think energy provision is just part of this evolution. Technologies in this field are changing at pace and it’s thrilling to be involved in their delivery.

Half year operating profits were £5.9 million on a turnover of £12.3 million, with shareholders receiving a final dividend of 12p per share for 2022, which was paid in July.
With many people still feeling the consequences of the UK’s reliance on dirty, expensive fossil fuels, we’re continuing to fund and build new clean energy projects that not only contribute to the country’s decarbonisation goals but deliver cleaner, cheaper power for people today.
<h3>Strong performance across the portfolio</h3>

We were pleased to report the successful construction of England’s largest onshore wind turbine during the first half of the year, which we helped fund with a £4 million investment. The 4.2 MW turbine in Bristol is the only onshore wind turbine to be built this year in England and is now generating clean electricity, with profits being reinvested back into the local community.
In addition, we’re proud to say that we’re the first commercial battery owner in the UK to offer a local community group an opportunity for shared ownership of a standalone battery storage project. Bristol Energy Cooperative (BEC) will be able to make a co-investment of up to 20% in our 20 MW battery project on Feeder Road in Bristol. The addition of this project alongside the ACE turbine and our existing 8.2 MW Avonmouth wind farm means that we’ve now funded more than a third of Bristol’s total renewable electricity generation and storage capacity (37%).
<h3>Growing pipeline of clean energy projects </h3>
Entering the second half of the year in a strong position, we have a range of new projects in the pipeline to continue growing our portfolio of wind, solar, geothermal, hydro and battery projects. This includes our biggest single investment to date, which has seen us provide a £20 million loan to Ethical Power to help fund 192 MW of new solar PV and battery storage projects across the UK.

Strong performance from the portfolio with an increase in operating profits - half year results 2023

This includes plans to build two 25 MW battery storage sites and four solar projects (142 MW in total) across the UK over the next three to five years. The completion of these projects will see the portfolio of assets that we’ve funded and/or built more than double in size – from 145 MW to 337 MW.
Through various partnerships, Ethical Power owns solar and battery energy storage projects at different stages of development and construction, including two extensive solar and BESS projects. Ethical Power is the principal EPC contractor on these projects, which enables optimal design, streamlined delivery and the most effective use of the resources from development to operation.

In our biggest single investment to date, we’ve provided a £20 million loan to Ethical Power to fund their share of a pipeline of projects.

New deal with Ethical Power will help double Thrive's impact as developer constructs 192MW of new solar and battery storage projects

The contract awarded to Exergy will include the design and engineering of the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system for converting heat to electricity. As innovators in the global ORC industry, Exergy will use their Radical Outflow Turbine, a highly efficient technology which will produce electricity from the heat of the geothermal fluid. The use of a closed loop cycle will ensure the environmental and visual impact of the system is minimal.  
The site is due to start producing renewable electricity by late 2024 as well as zero carbon heat which could be used to power a nearby housing development at Langarth Garden Village. Once operational, GEL estimates this project will save more than 6,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year compared to fossil fuel power generation.
