Wern Ddu wind farm

Welsh wind farm increased Thrive’s generational capacity by nearly 40%.

Project summary

Thrive acquired Wern Ddu wind farm in North Wales in 2009 and it was commissioned in March the following year. At 9.2 MW, the four turbine wind farm was our second largest clean energy asset to date – generating over 11,000 MWh of clean electricity in its first nine months of commissioning. Bringing Wern Ddu into the portfolio increased Thrive’s generational capacity from 23.5MW to 32.7MW – a near 40% increase.

In addition to generating clean, homegrown power, Wern Ddu provided a community benefit fund to support local initiatives. In 2015, this included a £10,000 payment to support a wide range of initiatives including meals on wheels, children’s playground equipment, junior sports team kits and provision of art workshops. We sold the project in 2019 and it continues to generate renewable electricity under new ownership.
