Be part of the clean energy movement

The project was initially designed to generate enough renewable energy to power its wastewater treatment site but, by the time planning consent was granted, a number of other on-site electricity generation initiatives meant the company was already self-sufficient.
We were able to work quickly and effectively with Wessex Water to complete the deal and built the project on site. Just 13 months later, the four turbines commenced generation for the first time – now generating enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of 5,232 average UK homes every year. Located in the industrial area of Avonmouth, Bristol, we bought the rights to an 8.2MW wind farm from GENeco, owned by Wessex Water.

Across the UK, there are some incredible local climate initiatives taking shape &#8211; community gardens, repair cafes, energy efficiency schemes and so much more. This year Thrive is widening the scope of our Community Benefit Programme to support a broader range of initiatives that communities feel are most needed to support climate action in their local neighbourhood. Applications are open now, inviting communities near our clean energy projects to apply for grants that support initiatives which:

Tell us how you want climate action to look in your area

What’s really positive to see from the ONS figures is that 77% of people said they have made changes to their lifestyle in order to help tackle environmental issues. This includes changes to shopping habits, diet and travel. 80% also reported taking action to reduce waste.  
Despite so many of us wanting more action on climate (over 80% in fact), we often underestimate the support of others and so sharing solutions and connecting with others is really important to feel supported and increase collective action. Reaching out to organisations like <a href="https://groups.friendsoftheearth.uk/join" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Friends of the Earth</a> and <a href="https://www.greenpeace.org.uk/volunteering/join-a-local-volunteer-group/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Greenpeace</a> is a good way to find local climate action groups near you.

All our actions count (more than you think)

Reducing emissions isn’t just about building big wind farms. In neighbourhoods across the UK, communities are developing smaller, local clean energy projects that provide cleaner, cheaper power whilst boosting revenue and jobs in the local area. The Ambition Community Energy wind turbine in Bristol which Thrive funded the construction of is a great example of a local community coming together to take climate action into their own hands. As well as providing a new revenue stream to drive regeneration in the area, plans for an Energy Learning Zone will inspire young people and upskill residents to pursue green careers.

Community energy - power by the people for the people

So far Thrive has invested over £21 million into community energy projects as part of our mission to ensure everyone benefits from the clean energy transition. With the government pledging to support 1,000 community energy projects by 2030 and invest £1 billion in the sector as part the Local Power Plan, we hope to see community energy getting a big boost over the next few years.

The impact of the global climate crisis has got closer to home. But it’s also in our local neighbourhoods that some very effective solutions are taking shape.

The climate emergency just got personal. But solutions are on our doorstep too.

Thrive’s Community Benefit Programme has been running since 2016, helping community centres near our sites to make energy efficiency improvements that reduce bills and carbon emissions. During that time, we’ve awarded over £258,000 in grants to community centres across the UK, saving an estimated 99 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.  
Building on the success of our existing programme, we’re now inviting communities to apply for grants that support a wider range of community initiatives, enabling local people to propose climate, nature or energy related projects that they feel are most needed in their neighbourhood. This could be initiatives that enable local people to take climate action, reduce emissions or save energy, or measures that improve access to green spaces and help people connect with nature in their area.  
The programme is open to community initiatives located within a 15 mile radius of one of our rurally based clean energy projects, or within a 5 mile radius of one of our urban clean energy projects. Groups can apply for grants of up to £4,500. Applications close on 26th November.

Community Benefit Programme now open – tell us how you want climate action to look in your area

The 10MW project generates enough clean electricity to power over 4,000 average UK homes a year, avoiding the emission of more than 6,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. It is also one of the first sites in the UK to achieve Wild Power certification – verifying the measures we’ve introduced to make the solar farm a haven for local wildlife.
During the site visit, shareholders had an opportunity to view the neighbouring skylark area, where Thrive has introduced measures to create a more open botanically rich grassland that is better suited to breeding skylarks. Other biodiversity measures we have introduced on site include planting new species rich grassland and hedgerows, plus installing bird and bat boxes.
In addition to the site visit, Thrive’s management team provided an update on progress from the first half of the year during a presentation and Q&amp;A session at the local village hall.
