Get up close to an operational wind turbine at our free family open day

  • Posted: 30 Aug 2022

For the first time since 2019, we’re hosting an open day! You’ll have chance to tour our wind farm at Avonmouth in Bristol, learn more about renewable energy and enjoy lots of other fun activities on-site as #GreatBigGreenWeek kicks off.

Want to find out more about renewable energy and how it’s helping power our homes in a clean, sustainable way? Simply looking for a fun day out?

From 10am – 3pm on Saturday 24 September, we’re inviting you to join us at our Avonmouth wind farm in Bristol for a day filled with fun activities for the whole family. Take a tour of the site, peek into the base of a turbine with one of Thrive’s experts, watch the lively, interactive climate change show by Explorer Dome and enjoy lots of other wind-related activities for kids, from arts and crafts to face painting and more. Entry is by ticket only and places are limited, please visit the Eventbrite page here to book.

The event takes place at the start of #GreatBigGreenWeek – the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature, started by the Climate Coalition.

This will be Thrive’s first open day since 2019, after putting the event on hold due to Covid-19 restrictions. Some transport will be provided from the city centre and Lawrence Weston.

“Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces as they learn something new about the environment is priceless, so we look forward to welcoming the local Bristol community back on-site and giving them an opportunity to learn more about renewables and the work we do. It’s also a great opportunity for our shareholders to come and see the positive impact they are having, not only on the communities living close by but in reducing carbon emissions and tackling the climate emergency.” – Adrian Warman, Head of Operations, Thrive Renewables

Just 15 minutes from our head office in Bristol, the industrial site at Avonmouth is one of the largest dock areas in Europe. Our four turbines are built on the site of Wessex Water’s wastewater treatment plant – a good coastal location for uninterrupted wind. The turbines have a total capacity of 8.2MW, with a forecasted annual output of 20.9GWh – that’s enough clean electricity to power over 5,000 average UK homes.
